Workplace Learning
Workplace learning provides opportunities for students to develop skills in the workplace and obtain credit towards the WACE. Workplace Learning is a SCSA Endorsed Program.
To complete this endorsed program, a student applies to work in one or more real workplace/s to develop a set of transferable workplace skills. The student must record the number of hours completed and the tasks undertaken in the workplace in the Authority’s Workplace Learning Logbook. The student must also provide evidence of his/her knowledge and understanding of the workplace skills by completing the Authority’s Workplace Learning Skills Journal. Unit equivalence is allocated on the basis of 1 unit equivalent for each 55 hours completed in the workplace, to a maximum of 4 units. The total number of hours completed in the workplace is reported on the student’s WASSA.
Workplace learning can be completed in one or two week blocks, or one day per week dependent on the needs of the student and the host employer.
Workplace learning generally refers to work experience placements that are unpaid placements within industry. Insurance for such placements are covered by the Department of Education's insurance policies. Whilst students are undertaking the school managed placements students are monitored by school staff.
If students have a part time job and paid for their work, then Workplace learning credits can still be gained by completing the log book however this is outside of school hours and schools do not manage these placements as a standard employer-employee relationship is in existence.
